But for some, public speaking is something that naturally happens in their daily routine. Supervisors, teachers and supervisors- they all do speak to a number of people on a standard basis. And, possibly, they do have the personalities that inclined them toward career and circumstances where in public speaking is needed. It is very seldom that you meet an attorney, commanding officer or a professor who is shy and afraid to speak in front of a large group. However, it is very usual to meet librarians, architects and scientists who have fears in public speaking. Even those accountants, delivery drivers and construction workers have such fears in facing the crowd. So, whatever profession you have, as long as you are not required to talk and face the crowd, you will always have that negative outlook such in public speaking. They always have that fear of having mistakes in front of many people. However, whether we like it or not. There will always come a time where we will be required to talk and face a number of people. So, everyone must really find time to develop their skills in public speaking. Learn the essential elements of public speaking to help you overcome your fear and boost confidence. Here are 4 essential elements of public speaking: 1. Composure. This is also known as "self-possession." That is how you carry yourself on stage. Your whole body is your tool that creates the connection between you and the crowd. In short, your body is like a vessel that carries your message to the audience. So, make sure that you are in your good posture. Stand up straight and make your limbs and spine straight also. Stand with confidence. Be in your natural and most comfortable look where your body can move freely. Make hand gestures that express discipline and strength. The trick is you experiment and find out beforehand those "power gestures" or "power moves" you can use. 2. Cadence. This is rhythm, tempo or speed of speaking. People tend to speak very fast. They tend to rush things. But this won't help, especially if you're nervous. All you need is to naturally slow down and pronounce every word clearly. You will be more in control and deliberate if you slow down a bit. Moreover, your words would appear clearer and easier to comprehend. However, if you are a natural slow talker, then you need to speed up a little. 3. Communication. This may sound very usual, because it takes place everyday. But in public speaking, this would not exactly mean the typical conversations with our neighbor and friends. The situation in the world of public speaking is a bit different. Well, you don't get that immediate feedback from your audience, but the essential mechanics of emotion, personal need and intention are just the same. This means that you should express naturally your feelings whenever you talk. You must connect with your audience and convince them the meaning of what you're saying. Remember that you communicate meanings and not just words. 4. Comedy- Funniness, levity, comedy and humor. Whatever name you call it, is a very valuable and powerful tool in public speaking. People especially those belong to the higher level in the society, such as the President, military and professionals do use humor in their speech. Adding a little humor in your speech is important because it catches the attention of your audience and eventually develops rapport with them. |
