Stress Response: Savior to Killer

As we’ve evolved, the human stress response has saved our lives. Today, we turn on the same life-saving physical reaction to cope with intense, ongoing stressors – and we can’t seem to turn it off. Robert Sapolsky, Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University, reveals just how dangerous prolonged exposure to stress can be in the documentary, “Stress: Portrait of a Killer.” Stress: Portrait of a Killer Website: killerstress.stanford.edu Stanford University: www.stanford.edu Stanford University Channel on youtube: www.youtube.com

The mass media does not help, constantly pumping FEAR FEAR FEAR into the psychic atmosphere either.

And they do it to make money off the people they frighten and stress.

2:33 — “Run for your life! This is no time to ovulate!”

I’m sure I can use that line somewhere.

This guy is right when he talks about “psychological bullshit.” I say, bring back REAL danger in our lives! Take up some extreme sport like base jumping or freestyle motocross. After you’ve stared death in the face and lived to tell about it, I guarantee your stress level will go down.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to prepare for the shark wrestling tournament tomorrow.

As a second-generation Parkinson’s Patient, I witnessed the father whose example taught me the great lessons of life save the best until last, one that I now pass on to my children.

But the visible component – the tremors and dyskenesia – are mild by comparison to the disabling effects of stress that cause panic attacks so severe that death by cardiac arrest seemed always imminent and, taken with increasing slowness of mental processes and inability to self-monitor my own tasks, ended my work
